New Year, New Me; you finished pretending to know the words to Auld Lang Syne weeks ago and any hangover is (hopefully) a distant memory but the real question is – have you already broken 10 out of 5 of your new years resolutions!? We hope not but now that we’ve passed the middle of January you may be starting to feel your resolve waver. To try and help you become the “new me” you were so keen on transforming into on January the 1st we’ve gathered together some hints and tips to get you through the first month of the year and beyond. We’ve also found a bit of information about some of the most popular resolutions – it’s never too late to jump on the bandwagon and overhaul your lifestyle!
Maybe your resolution last year was to be more optimistic and keep your cup half full . . . . with wine, whiskey, vodka – and you’ve realised that now is the time to cut back! Let’s be honest you can preserve a lot of things in alcohol but your dignity isn’t one of them – so taking dry january lets you find your “new me” for 2017. Dry January is a great way to raise some money for charity while also making healthy choices – everyone wins! The phrase “Dry January” is a trademark of the charity Alcohol Concern and getting sponsorship for your sobriety is a great way to keep that New Years Resolution about being charitable too. However, if you find yourself floundering then non alcoholic cocktails and smoothies can be a great way to re-invigorate yourself. Have fun finding recipes and trying new fruit juices – keep your drinks exciting but soft!
A little bit newer than Dry January, Veganuary is another popular New Year’s challenge which has recently found its way into the limelight. Created to promote the benefits of plant-based diets, veganuary asks that you go vegan for a month and say no to cheese, milk, eggs and meat. This is a great way to get healthy and reduce your impact on global warming just by dropping those cheese-loaded pizzas and whipped cream mochas. However, if you find yourself dreaming of smoky bacon and ice cream then perhaps consider the Quorn alternative to bacon (it’s just bacon-y enough to get you your fix, I promise!). For the ice cream, try a soy milk alternative and if you can’t get hold of that, fruit juice sorbets. There are ways around any craving. If you want to spice up your vegan meals then we recommend looking up some Keralan onam recipes and sadya menus – flavoursome and spicy they will make you forget you ever salivated at the thought of baked brie!
About 12% of New Gym memberships are purchased in January – and about 80% of the “new year new me” crowd drops off into oblivion by the end of February. So if you are a fitness fanatic you probably would have been wise to avoid the gym for the past few weeks because the second week of January is one of the busiest of the year. It’s an old joke that nobody uses their gym membership but it really does work out that only about 18% of card holders use their gym regularly. This means there is a 1 in 5 chance you will stick to your new fitness regime – so how can you increase your chances of success? Take baby steps and make yourself an exercise programme that starts easy and increases very (very) gradually with your strength. That way you won’t notice how much longer you are spending in the gym each week, it will never feel like too much of a chore and you won’t do yourself any damage!
New Year, New Me . . . And You
Perhaps your new years resolution isn’t so much a self-improvement plan as it is a dating overhaul! New year’s day is big business for dating sites which see a 20% hike in signups in January. Six pm on the first Sunday of the year is the busiest exact time during this season and this is when over 80000 people sign up to the site Plenty of Fish. January is also perhaps the best time to sign up if you want to couple up – if you sign up at this time of year then you could find your dreamboat 2 weeks faster than at any other time! So if your new years resolution is to find that someone special and socialise more then get online to find likeminded singles.
If you really can’t stick to your January promises then don’t beat yourself up! Perhaps it is better to make a New Years Resolution to be less amazing – it’s the only thing you definitely do too much! Or make it easier for yourself, make it your New Years resolution to write 2017 instead of 2016 (although I must say I’m struggling even with that one!). Have a happy year everyone!
